Sailing towards sustainability

Humans, nature, climate and technology – hardly any other sport sees these elements be so intertwined as sailing. And there’s probably hardly any other sport where athletes are so dependent on the climatic conditions. Sailors can only attain success if they understand the power of nature: wind, water and waves. It’s no surprise that they feel so connected to nature and are forging ahead with climate protection.

Sailing has come on leaps and bounds technologically in recent years: the foils lift the boats out of the water, for more speed, more action and more fun! All the major races now use these underwater foils – from surfing to offshore racing to the America’s Cup! Sailing fans can watch live to witness moments that seem to defy the rules of physics.

Sailing in the public eye

The major regattas with global reach aren’t just about prestige and exclusivity: they offer the perfect platform to make innovation and sustainable solutions tangible.

This is reason enough to see sailing as a playing field for brands and companies even more in the future and tap into its storytelling potential, authenticity and attractive target group. The momentum couldn’t be better: after the Olympic Games and the America’s Cup, lots more high-class sports events are planned – such as the Vendée Globe from November 2024 to March 2025 and SailGP, which will be hosted in Germany for the first time in August 2025.

Factors, formats and initiatives in sailing

Sailing stands for exciting stories, offering a perfect blend of adventure, forces of nature, technical skill and human stamina. Here are a few reasons why sailing generates such fascinating stories.

Climate as the arena, water as the element, and gender equality as the crew: sailing combines key aspects of environmental and social responsibility. Topics with societal relevance and impact can be integrated flawlessly and aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. After all, water as the decisive factor, water as a fundamental requirement and mixed crews as an active display of gender equality are constant factors that embed the topic of sustainability within the sport’s very nature.

In August 2019, Swedish activist Greta Thunberg sailed from the UK to New York, accompanied by sailor Boris Herrmann, to take part in the UN climate summit. She decided to travel by sailboat to underscore her message of sustainability and environmental protection, as flights generate a great deal of CO2. The journey on yacht *Malizia II*, a zero-emissions boat with solar panels and underwater turbines to generate energy, took two weeks. Her endeavour drew attention from around the globe and symbolised Thunberg’s commitment to climate protection and her appeal to the world to take urgent action to combat climate change.

The “Turn the Tide on Plastic” initiative started in 2017 as part of the Volvo Ocean Race with the aim of drawing attention to increasing plastic pollution in the oceans. Led by skipper Dee Caffari, the team of international sailors didn’t just compete in the race for sporting reasons: they were also engaged in a clear-cut environmental mission to raise awareness of the threat of plastic waste in the world’s oceans and promote tangible solutions. The campaign encouraged people to reduce the amount of plastic they consume and support ocean protection by combating pollution via single-use plastic globally.

The “Sailing #Art4GlobalGoals” initiative was launched to raise awareness of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to kick-start global changes through art and sailing. The idea pairs artistic projects with sailing events to make people aware of crucial issues such as climate protection, social justice and clean oceans. Artists decorate sailing boats with images that visualise the 17 SDGs. The initiative taps into sailing’s international reach to inspire people around the globe to get involved for a fairer, more sustainable future.

Climate change is the biggest threat facing the oceans. We want to use the emotions of the sport to inspire people to think and act ambitiously. Sailing can serve as a vehicle for transmitting the concept of sustainability to the public.
